First recorded in Sri Lanka in 1931 from Kumbalgamuwa, was initially identified as a subspecies based on three specimens collected by Phillips (1932). After 65 years, a single specimen was captured in 1996 in Bulathsinhala. Despite extensive field studies, this species has only been documented twice in Sri Lanka. Currently the species is listed as Critically Endangered in the country, but Least Concern globally due to its wide distribution.

In 2016, Tharaka Kusuminda and Wipula B. Yapa discovered a roosting colony at Sigiriya Fortress, adding a new chapter to its history. Excitingly, researchers are soon expected to announce the discovery of a new roosting colony of this elusive bat.
