Butterflies of Sri Lanka

Despite its small size, Sri Lanka is home to 248 species of butterflies, including 31 endemic species found nowhere else in the world. The island’s rich topography, climate, and vegetation—from coastal dry zones to lush hill country—create ideal habitats for these colourful insects.

Butterflies are most abundant in the foothills up to 3,000 feet (910 m), while fewer species occur at elevations above 4,000 feet (1,200 m). About 20 species are restricted to the low-lyingdry zone, below 500 feet (150 m). Butterfly activity peaks during two key seasons: the southwestern monsoon (March–April) and the northeastern monsoon (September–October),making these months the best for butterfly watching. Sri Lanka’s butterfly fauna is closely related to that of peninsular India, but the island also hosts species with unique evolutionary histories—some introduced by trade, others found only here. Our gallery highlights this diversity, offering a glimpse into one of the most vibrant aspects of Sri Lanka’s biodiversity.
