Sri Lanka is home to an impressive variety of mammals, with 95 terrestrial species recorded to date—21 of which are endemic to the island. In addition, the surrounding Indian Ocean supports around 30 species of marine mammals, including several species of whales and dolphins, making the island a hotspot for both land and sea mammal encounters. Some of the country’s most iconic terrestrial mammals include the Sri Lankan leopard, Sri Lankan elephant, sloth bear, toque macaque, and the purple-faced langur. Remarkably, one-third of Sri Lanka’s land mammals are bats, showcasing the island’s rich cave and forest habitats.
Among them is a significant recent discovery: Hipposideros srilankaensis, the first bat species endemic to Sri Lanka. Whether you’re exploring the dry zone jungles, misty highlands, or coastal waters, Sri Lanka offers unforgettable opportunities to witness its diverse and often elusive mammal life.
